Given the present price of alternative energy sytems, there's no way our old stone house with an oil-fired Rayburn is going to have zero carbon emissions. So we're not spotless environmentally, but we do a lot to reduce our impact on the planet for the sake of our children and grandchildren. Here are a few of the things we do.
We have solar panels for heating our hot water and have just replaced our ancient and highly inefficient boiler with a condensing oil boiler.

We religiously recycle or compost whatever can be recycled or composted. Shropshire Council takes away cardboard and other biodegradable material and feeds it to a bio-digester in Ludlow which is good use of our Council Tax.
We minimize the use of plastic bags by constantly reusing them, declining them in shops, or by using alternatives such as long-lasting shopping bags, and when they're worn out, we can recycle them in Knighton.
We work hard at minimizing our food miles - eggs and lamb come from half a mile away
Nearly all our light bulbs are the low energy type.
The house is double-glazed, draft-proofed and well insulated (some of the insulation is made from recycled plastic bottles).
We keep the use of the Rayburn to the minimum, using electricity supplied from renewable sources as an alternative.
In winter we live in fewer rooms and shut down much of the house through the use of thermostatically controlled radiators.
Any new eletrical appliances we buy are graded A or B for environmentally friendliness.
Timber used in repairs and renovation is recycled from scrap whenever possible or comes from sustainable sources.
We're happy to be part of a growing home tourist industry that offers a far better alternative to cheap-flight hell.
We try to use Freecycle before throwing away anything remotely re-usable.
We publish this page and hope it will contribute to the general climate-change debate and will encourage others to make changes to their lifestyles.
We hope that makes us an eco-friendly B&B.
